There is no leader. No conductor. No central signal telling them when to flash. Each firefly responds to the flashes around it, adjusting its own rhythm incrementally until the entire population locks into phase. The mathematics governing this are coupled oscillator equations — the same mathematics Christiaan Huygens observed in 1665 when two pendulum clocks on the same wall synchronized their swings.
Coherence doesn't require a controller. When conditions are right, the field self-organizes. This is what emergence looks like — not designed, not directed, but inevitable once the coupling is sufficient. Order arising from the field itself.
